Harleyford Lane Family Bike Ride

This is one of our go-to easy family bike rides when we want a hassle free/quick trip out. It heads up Pound Lane and along the side of the Henley Road for just a few metres before going down Harleyford Lane and back along the tow path into Higginson Park. Check out the route below.
The blue path shows an alternative route which is all off road. You need to pass through a kissing gate for the blue route which is fine for bikes without baby seats. The blue route footpath is fairly narrow but absolutely fine when stinging nettles areĀ not in full ‘bloom’. Worth avoiding this route when they are if you have little legs with you.
Need to know
Distance: Roughly a 3 mile circular route starting and finishing in Higginson Park.
Hazards: Pound lane is pretty safe for cycling but it is a road nonetheless. We find cycling two a breast works quite well to keep littler riders safe. The road is wide and traffic restricted to 30mph and we’ve found it ok even with newbie cyclers. The short stretch from the top of Pound Lane to Harleyford has grass verges so if you have young riders they can just push their bikes along this stretch until you reach Harleyford lane where you ca then relax. On the way back the tow path can get busy in peak summer months but generally it’s fine. A bell on the kids bikes can be useful!
Pit Stop: in the summer finishing in Higgie park with an ice cream is a nice treat. Don’t forget some cash!
