Life saving first aid – do you have the skills?
Would you know what to do if your child had a medical emergency? It’s a horrible thought but one we must not ignore.

MarlowMums.com chatted to Chloe Hill from Mini First Aid to find out more about the courses she runs, what’s involved and why she got involved with teaching these courses.
Chloe has a few spaces left on her Marlow course next week. Find out more below, including our review and about the special freebie Chloe is offering.
Chloe, how long have you been involved with Mini First Aid and what prompted you to start running these courses?
I have been running Mini First Aid Thames Valley for almost 4 years now. It all started because my 3rd daughter had an accident and pulled a boiling hot drink over her bare feet whilst in a restaurant on holiday. I’m mortified to say it now, but I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have the basic knowledge to know how to react. When we returned home I went on a first aid class and subsequently heard about Mini First Aid needing a franchise in our area so I jumped at the chance. The skills you learn are basic and logical – anyone can learn them, but everyone looking after a child SHOULD learn them. Knowing what to do in an emergency is crucial for the mini people in our lives. So many things can go wrong, head bumps, nasty cuts, meningitis scares, choking, burns, broken bones to name a few. Knowing when to call an ambulance is crucial and you learn all of this on the class.
What are the main subjects covered during the course? How is the course structured?
The class is 2 hours and is structured in a way that aims to give parents confidence, rather than scaring the life out of them! So it starts with the basics – the First Aid Kit and what to put in it specifically for children. Then I ease into what to do in an emergency, CPR, Choking, Burns, Breaks, Bleeds, Head bumps, Febrile Seizures and Meningitis Awareness. I also throw a few extra bits in from my own experience as a parent, such as what to do if a tooth is knocked out, or if your child shoves a pea up their nose! The really lovely thing is that you can also bring your pre-crawling baby, so childcare shouldn’t be a problem for those new parents. I try to make everyone feel relaxed, we don’t do any role playing – which I know can put people off. It’s mostly me talking and demonstrating but anyone can ask questions throughout.
For anyone who has done a course already, how often should we refresh our skills?
In an ideal world you would refresh your skills every year, but I know that is sometimes unrealistic. However, if you ever get to the stage when you feel you wouldn’t actually remember what to do if your child stopped breathing, or had a terrible head bump, then that would be a good time to come on a class. Or create your own – if you wanted a bespoke refresher class with a group of friends – that can be arranged too.
I run private classes for a minimum of 5 people and I teach in nurseries and schools from age 2 up to teens. I love the school classes – the kids are brilliant and unafraid of learning anything to do with first aid. They especially love the plasters!
For this class, for every booking through Marlow Mums, people will receive a free Whoopsadaisy Bump Pack worth £4 – great for bumps and bruises.
How much does the course cost?
It’s just £25 – the cost of a takeaway!

The MarlowMums Verdict
Being brutally honest, attending a first aid course can feel a little bit like one of those ‘to do list’ items that keeps getting bumped down the list. We all know it’s important to know first aid but sometimes we can put off actually doing it, or just as importantly, refreshing our skills until next week, or next month when we’ll be less busy. Actually, now is the time as tomorrow could be too late.
I attended one of Chloe’s courses before lock down. It really is time well spent. Chloe is so friendly, approachable and easy to listen to. The course was fun and most importantly, I felt it taught me the skills I needed.
I would highly recommend attending one of Chloe’s courses.
