Higginson Park Improvement Plans
MarlowMums were hugely excited to hear of the improvement plans in the pipeline for the play area in Higginson Park. We were even more excited to hear that Buckinghamshire Council are requesting suggestions from locals on how to make the space work best.
Higginson Park is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of our lovely town. When we were relocating from London nearly ten years ago it was the park, the river and green space just off the High Street that made Marlow the top of our list and it’s what draws so many people into the town for days out. However, the play park, it’s fair to say, has been well loved and used and is now in desperate need of a glow up which is why we’re so happy it’s getting the investment it deserves.
Following our shout out on social media for your suggestions we received a huge number of ideas on what mums and dads want to see so thank you! We’ve compiled all of your thoughts and comments and have sent them on to Buckinghamshire Council so watch this space!
If you have other ideas not on our list, add them as a reply below and we’ll ensure these are fed back to Bucks Council. Have your opinions heard.
- A separate area for younger children and older children as it is difficult to keep them safe in such a large space
- A zip wire and more challenging climbing frames for older children that build strength like monkey bars
- A splash pad or water play area
- A sandpit
- A sunken trampoline area
- More swings for younger children as there is always a queue at the weekends
- Due to the high usage of the park, increasing its footprint to make the space larger with a bigger variety of equipment
- A more ‘natural’ look with lots of wood and rope
- A disabled swing and some wheelchair accessible equipment
More seating areas for parents and carers - A separate area with seating that dogs can enter as lots of families bring their dogs to the park and do not feel comfortable tying them to the gates outside
- Improving the baby changing facilities in the toilets
- Only one entrance and exit to make it safer
- Picnic tables
- Plants and shrubs to make the area feel greener.

I would love the play area to be rebuilt in a more natural wooden style

A few people have suggested a more natural wooden look. We put that on our list to the council so hopefully they’ll listen!

Great suggestions, I agree with water play. My concern is when is this all happening, are we going to be loosing the park come spring/summer?

My 9 year old daughter says she would like there to be monkey bars too.

I’d definitely love to see more natural/wooden structures & playhouses. Wokingham has a really lovely newish natural playground (Elm’s Field) with interactive sound play elements, a floor level trampoline and soft flooring for trips and falls.

A basketball net next to the skate park please
We have to drive to Cookham – Alfred major or Maidenhead to practise basketball skills

To really design with the child in mind. There are a few nice role play areas within the park & these are great to encourage imagination, so incorporating something similar, as well as thinking about what equipment to buy! Perhaps nice planting, or herbs or even some veggies grown around the edges. Also equipment that is multi functional, rather than say just a slide or a climbing frame! Some tunnels are good. Parks in Maidenhead have some outdoor exercise machines
Great for older children and adults who cannot afford a gym

Hi ladies,
I would love to suggest having an area for just picnics or kids play area on grass where dogs are unable to go. They had this in henley playground which is now the mini golf.
It’s getting really busy with dogs in marlow and there is no respite for the kids to sit on the grass without having dogs in the same space. My children are really nervous of dogs and as much as I’m trying to keep them calm and get them used to animals, it doesn’t help with the volume of dogs and off the leads running around. It’s hard to sit and have a picnic without constant interruption from dogs, owners often are not the best at being aware of this.
